"Every journey starts with a single step"
If you are just getting started, it's easy to
be overwhelmed by the accomplishments of others. Beginning
runners often ask questions like "I can't relate to someone
being able to run a 26.2 mile marathon, when I can barely
run a mile. How do they do it?" Well, rest assured, every
marathon runner was a beginner when they first started; they
were exactly where you are now!
It's all a matter of perspective:
*A 3.1 mile 5k race can seem like a long way, to a runner
who can only run a mile.
*A 6.2 mile 10k race can seem like a long way, to a runner
who can only run 2 miles.
*A 13.1 mile half-marathon can seem like a long way, to a
runner who can only run 3 miles.
*And, a 26.2 mile marathon can seem like a long way to just
about everyone, ha ha.
Whether your goal is to improve your running ability, or run
a marathon some day, your best course of action is to focus
inward, and strive for gradual, controlled, continual
improvement. Target each of your running goals one at a
time, and when you achieve them, move on to the next, and
the next. One of the terrific things about running, is that
your triumph comes from meeting your own objectives, not
those of others. If you train correctly and focus inward, it
won't be long until you're able to tell someone else "you
can do it too", after you've just completed your first
marathon!
